Which should you choose for your truck: a tonneau cover or a canopy?

Owning a truck means you can transport just about anything you need to where it needs to go.  The last thing you want to happen is for your load to fly out of the truck’s bed and either become damaged, lost, or worse yet–injure another person or vehicle on the road.  Sure, tie-downs can do a lot to keep your load safe, but many times it’s just not enough for the kind of material you’re transporting.  If you’re considering a more structured cover for your truck, here are a few criteria to consider from the team at Duraflap Drill-less Mudflaps:

  1. How frequently will you need an open bed?  Canopies and tonneau covers are both removable, but once you’ve gone through the work to install them, you don’t want to remove them frequently.  Canopies are more challenging to install and often require at least two people.  Because canopies have a hard ceiling, the space is very defined, and without removing the cover entirely, it’s hard to use the area for things like hauling gravel, dirt, or large appliances. On the other hand, tonneau covers are easier to install, so removing the cover for a different type of load isn’t as big of a deal.  Also, you can fold many tonneau covers back to allow open access to the truck’s bed as needed.
  2. What will you be hauling with the cover on the bed?  Obviously, the covered area with a canopy is much larger than the space under a tonneau cover.  If you’re hauling large equipment or boxes taller than the bed of your truck, a canopy may be the right solution for you.  On the other hand, since a tonneau cover is easier to remove and may even fold back, you will have more variation for tall and short/loose materials with a tonneau cover in the long run.
  3. How important is appearance for you?  Functionality is one thing, but face it–your truck is an extension of your personality.  If your rig’s look is important, choose the style–canopy or tonneau cover–that you feel most comfortable with.
