Will Living in Your RV be the New Trend for Home Ownership?

If you’ve watched home improvement television lately, you have likely seen many programs featuring singles, couples, and families choosing to downsize and move into a “tiny home.”  That name is certainly accurate since most tiny homes only range between 100-400 square feet.  People are drawn to tiny homes for a number of reasons:

  • To achieve self-sufficiency,
  • To simplify their lives,
  • To achieve control over their finances, and
  • To be free to embark on life adventures.

According to KOA, these same tiny home desires are leading more and more millennials to purchase RV’s as well.  While RV’s are not as customizable as custom-built tiny homes, the ability to purchase one conveniently and transport it easily provides the same benefits with a shorter ramp up time.

As of 2017, the number of millennials had surpassed baby boomers as the largest demographic in the United States.  Not surprisingly, the most desired type of RV for millennials have been mini RV’s and towables because they are more economical and eco-friendly.

In late 2018, the Washington Post reported one million Americans lived in RVs.  These “nomads” are either finding work along their travels or are able to conduct regular work remotely with modern technology.  By downsizing, Americans are finding the simple life more rewarding and the ability to “get up and move” at will leading to endless adventures.

But is it legal to live in your RV?  It depends.  Many people who live in their RV’s permanently may be traveling around the country and simply spending a few weeks to a couple of months at any one campsite along the way.  However, it gets trickier if you want to permanently park an RV on a piece of land.  Most parts of the country have zoning restrictions and other local regulations to consider before you purchase an RV and place it on a lot as your home sweet home.
