How about Getting Your Kicks on Route 66 this Summer?

Trying to figure out where to take your family this summer?  There’s still plenty of time left for a fun road trip in your RV.  How about a drive along the historic Route 66?  Here are a few tips from our team at DuraFlap to help you create the perfect itinerary:

Route 66 encompasses nearly 2,500 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles, so how do you determine what part to visit?  Well, first of all, not all of those 2,500 miles of highway exist anymore, and most parts that do are not considered a main thoroughfare.  Route 66 was decertified as a U.S. highway in 1985, but many of its businesses and its tourist attractions that made it so popular in its heyday are still there for your family to discover!

Today, the largest continuous stretch of Route 66 traverses through Arizona.  Whether you make a stop to visit the iconic Wigwam Motel in Holbrook or take an extra break to stand on the corner in Winslow, Arizona, there are sights for all your family to enjoy.

Take a short hour-long detour off of Route 66 between Winslow and Flagstaff to visit Meteor Crater, one of the largest and best-preserved impact sites on earth.  Call ahead to arrange a stay in their RV Park to enjoy a night under the stars.

Another must-do, while you’re traveling on Route 66, is to take a day trip or an extended stay at the Grand Canyon.  Enjoy breathtaking sights in every direction while the kiddos learn a little about the magnificence of Earth’s geology.

Speaking of the kids, the Petrified Forest National Park just outside of Holbrook is the perfect place for young and old alike to imagine the continent filled with dinosaurs.  This is the place to see some of the most fascinating fossils in the United States.
