Ready to experience why a half million visitors flock to Northern California every year just to look at some trees? Redwood National Forest is sure to be a vacation you and your family will enjoy like none other. Explore the nearly 132,000 acres filled with one of the most majestic trees on Earth. There are several campgrounds within the Redwood National Forest that allow RV camping, but you’ll need to plan ahead and make reservations.
If you have never stood next to a redwood tree, you are missing out on a truly awe-inspiring sight. Redwoods have been around since before the days of the dinosaurs. Scientists have found evidence of redwood trees that existed an estimated 240 million years ago. It takes quite a sturdy tree to survive that long. Today, you can find trees that are 300 or more feet tall, and the oldest known tree is thought to be about 2,200 years old. Most of the trees that you see are only about 150 years old, which is equivalent to being a 6-year-old human child. During the California gold rush, many redwoods were cut down, but thanks to replanting efforts, large forests of youngster trees are growing strong.
There are several options for RV camping amongst the beautiful redwoods. You find that most of the state parks have no hookups, so if you need amenities, you may need to look at a privately owned RV park. The good news is there is something for everyone and every size of RV.
You will find the Jedediah Smith Campground on the Smith River within Redwood National Park. There are 86 sites that can be used for tent or RV camping. Be prepared, though, because there are no hookups, and their sites only fit 25-foot RVs or 21-foot trailers. The campground is open year-round and features restrooms, hot showers, a dump station, picnic tables, fire pits, barbeques, food lockers, and an educational visitor center. Guests without camping gear may prefer to reserve one of their cabins.
One of the best places for RV camping is the Mill Creek Campground. Wake up under the towering redwoods and take in a deep breath of fresh air to awaken your body and soul. Once the coffee kicks in, you’ll be ready to explore the many miles of hiking trails that originate at the campground. There are 145 sites for tent and RV camping, making it the largest campground in Redwood National Park. There are no hookups, so make sure you have everything you need for an enjoyable stay onboard. The campground features restrooms, showers, a dump station, picnic tables, fire pits, barbeques, and food lockers.
If you prefer to spend time on the coast and amongst the redwoods, Gold Bluffs Beach Campground within the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park is an excellent choice. The park is located on the coastline just north of Eureka. The state of California protected the redwoods within this 14,000-acre park as a sanctuary of old-growth coast redwoods. Some of the trees extend over 300 feet toward the clouds.
The park features 26 tent and RV sites, although none have hookups. They have sites to accommodate RVs up to 24 feet, but no trailers are permitted. Campers have access to solar showers, restrooms, wind shelters, picnic tables, fire pits, barbeques, food lockers, and beach access. To get to the campground, you’ll drive about 6 miles down a gravel road.
Looking to relax with a few more amenities and hookups? The Klamath River RV Park is a popular choice for families. The park is located on the Lower Klamath River adjacent to the Redwood National Forest. You can explore the redwoods or enjoy a day of fishing for steelhead and salmon on the Lower Klamath River.
The park features 98 sites, and nearly all of them have full hookups, including 30 or 50-amp electrical, water, sewer, cable tv, and free wi-fi. Contact them directly to find out more about their pull-through sites. Venture out of your RV to enjoy BBQ grills, fish cleaning stations, laundry facilities, a kid’s playground, a coffee bar, and a gift shop.
