South Dakota’s Black Hills and Badlands offer a rugged yet beautiful escape, and there’s no better way to explore these iconic landscapes than by RV. With stunning vistas, rich cultural heritage, and thrilling outdoor adventures, this road trip promises something for everyone. Here’s how to make the most of your journey through this spectacular region.

Six Days in South Dakota

Travel Tips for Your RV Adventure

  • Pack for All Weather: The Black Hills and Badlands weather can be unpredictable. Summers can be hot, while evenings can be surprisingly cool. Pack layers and be prepared for sudden weather changes.
  • Prepare Your RV: Make sure you’re well stocked on groceries and supplies, and also check your tires, fluids, and battery levels. A set of custom mud flaps from DuraFlap to protect your tow rig or RV from road debris is also a good idea.
  • Watch for Wildlife on the Roads: The scenic drives through the Badlands are breathtaking, but keep an eye out for wildlife, especially bison, which can be found crossing the roads at any time.

Day 1: Start Your Journey in Rapid City

Known as the “Gateway to the Black Hills,” Rapid City is the perfect launching point for your adventure. Explore the city’s vibrant art scene, historic downtown, and even the famous Dinosaur Park. Be sure to stock up on supplies before heading deeper into the Black Hills.

Camping: Rapid City has several RV parks, such as the Rapid City RV Park & Campground, which offers full hookups and amenities to help you get settled in for the start of your trip.

Day 2: Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial

No visit to the Black Hills is complete without a stop at Mount Rushmore National Memorial. This colossal monument is an awe-inspiring sight that honors four iconic U.S. presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. While there, take some time to hike the Presidential Trail for a closer view.

Afterward, drive to the Crazy Horse Memorial, which is still under construction. This tribute to the Lakota leader Crazy Horse is poised to be the largest mountain carving in the world, and it offers incredible insights into Native American history and culture.

Tip: Both Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial offer RV parking.

Day 3: Custer State Park

Custer State Park, one of the largest state parks in the U.S., is home to several scenic drives, including the Needles Highway and Wildlife Loop. Keep an eye out for bison, elk, pronghorn antelope, and even the famous begging burros. If you’re up for a hike, consider the Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak) trail, the highest point east of the Rocky Mountains. The 360-degree views from the top are absolutely worth the effort.

Camping: Custer State Park offers several RV-friendly campgrounds that offer easy access to hiking trails and wildlife viewing areas.

Day 4: Badlands National Park

After soaking up the Black Hills, head to the stark beauty of Badlands National Park. Known for its dramatic landscapes of eroded buttes, colorful pinnacles, and spires, this park is like stepping into another world. Start at the Ben Reifel Visitor Center to learn about the park’s geology and history. Drive the Badlands Loop Scenic Byway, stopping at viewpoints like Big Badlands Overlook and Panorama Point to capture some incredible photos.

Camping: The Cedar Pass Campground inside the park is a great RV-friendly spot with panoramic views of the Badlands formations.

Day 5: Wind Cave National Park

On your way back from the Badlands, make time for a visit to Wind Cave National Park. The park is home to one of the world’s longest and most complex cave systems. Ranger-led tours take you deep into the cave to explore its unique and rare boxwork formations. Above ground, the park features rolling hills and prairies perfect for spotting wildlife, including bison and elk.

Tip: Check tour schedules in advance, as cave tours can fill up quickly, especially during peak travel seasons.

Day 6: Explore Deadwood

Finish your road trip in this historic town of Deadwood. Step back in time to the Wild West and explore the streets where famous figures like Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane once walked. Visit the Adams Museum to learn about the town’s gold rush history, and stop by Saloon #10 to experience a reenactment of Wild Bill’s last poker game.

Camping: RV parks near Deadwood, such as the Fish N Fry Campground, offer a peaceful base to relax after a day of exploration.
