What Size Pickup Truck is Right for You?

It’s time to hit the road again, and for many Americans, that means its time to shop for a new pickup truck.

With so many great pickup trucks out there, what should you consider when selecting the right truck for you and your family? Before you start test-driving all the trucks at your local dealership, consider these questions put together by the team at DuraFlap:

  1. Are you planning to haul big payloads? If you’ve got some serious work planned for your truck like hauling a larger trailer, loads of rock or machinery, you may need a heavy-duty truck. These are usually the truck models with large numbers like “2500” or “3500” in their names. Two good examples of heavy-duty trucks are the Ford F-350 and the GMC Sierra 3500HD.
  2. Will you be transporting a family in your truck or using it to pull a smaller trailer under 12,000 pounds loaded? In this case, a full-size (half-ton) pickup may be right for you. These models are often numbered with “1500” or similar in their names. Two examples of popular full-size pickups are the F-150 and the Ram 1500. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has up to 420 horsepower can tow over 11,000 pounds.
  3. Want a truck that will still hold your family but don’t need to pull quite than much weight? If you don’t need to tow more than 7,000 pounds, then a mid-size or compact pickup may be the right size for you. For example, the Chevrolet Colorado has up to 305 horsepower and can tow between 3,500-7,000 pounds.
  4. If you have the need for even larger loads such as a 40 foot 5th wheel you may find you need the extra suspension of a dual rear wheel truck. This could be either a 3500, 4500, 5500, or even p to a 6500 series truck.  Now you are talking payload.

Of course, you’ll want to decide if you need a regular cab with one row of seating or an extended or “super cab” with a second row and often a second set of doors. Many super cabs are just as roomy and comfortable to ride in as a 4-door SUV.
