Nebraska–the land of hard work, commitment to community, perseverance, and good, old-fashioned humor. A visit to this part of the world will immerse you and your family in beautiful landscapes and amazing wildlife while you interact with some of the best-natured folks you’ll meet in your lives. Nebraskans feel they are living the good life and welcome visitors to experience what their state is all about. If you haven’t considered an RV road trip to Nebraska before, here are some of the top “can’t miss” items for your itinerary.
Valentine is a small town just north of the Niobrara River in the northern part of the state. You’ll experience life in a quaint town while traveling to the surrounding area to visit some cool attractions. For example, you’ll find the largest tract of sand dunes in all of the Western Hemisphere here, as well as one of the largest aquifers in the world. Take time to wander through many of the local museums and historical landmarks, like the Arthur Bowring Ranch, Fort Valentine National Wildlife Refuge, and the haunted Centennial Hall Museum. If you prefer to relax with a glass of wine, you’ll enjoy a trip over to the Niobrara Valley Vineyards.
Scotts Bluff National Monument is located on the Oregon Trail. Witness the location that was home to the Native Americans and later welcomed pioneers on their expeditions out west. You’ll find the bluff near the North Platte River, protruding 800 feet above the landscape around it. Travel 1.6 miles up Summit Road to the top of the bluff and enjoy a heavenly view of the river below. Spend your day hiking trails throughout the park and meet park rangers dressed in period clothing. Conclude your day by stopping at the park museum to learn more about the area’s history.
No RV road trip is complete, with a stop or two at some of the most bizarre places on the road. Monowi is the smallest small town in the United States, with only one resident: Elsie Eiler. In the 1930’s, Monowi was a tiny yet developing town with 150 people. Elsie’s father immigrated from Germany, while her mother was a Nebraska native. The family lived on a farm just outside the town’s borders. After completing school, moving away, and marrying her grade school sweetheart, Rudy, the couple moved back to Monowi and opened the town’s tavern in 1975. Unfortunately, everyone except for Rudy and Elsie moved on, and Rudy passed away a few years ago. Yet, Elsie remains and looks forward to greeting visitors to her town with a smile. You can find her working at the Monowi Tavern.
The Henry Doorly Zoo is near Omaha on the banks of the Missouri River. Immerse yourself in another world as you experience the largest indoor rainforest in the world, the Lied Jungle. Inside the jungle, you’ll see hippos, monkeys, macaws, and other native rainforest species. Some of the trees in the enclosed rainforest reach heights of 80 feet or more. Outside the Lied Jungle, there are another 130 acres of animal exhibits and gardens, including a butterfly garden, an Orangutan Forest, and the world’s largest nocturnal animal exhibit.
Shop, drink, relax, and indulge in this quaint community within Omaha. The Old Market District welcomes tourists with beautiful public spaces, a 320-foot water jet and light show, and other attractions for the whole family. Your kids can learn about history at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive exhibit and the WWII and Airborne Memorial Sculptures. Nebraska’s tradition of having some of the most noteworthy attractions continues in the Old Market District. The state’s best Reuben sandwich is served from one of the town’s local restaurants, Crescent Moon.
